The lateral walls of the unpaired parts of the ventricular system - the third ventricle, the cerebral aqueduct, the fourth ventricle and the spinal canal - can be observed in the medial view of the brain. These are handy landmarks, because the thalamus and hypothalamus lie next to the third ventricle; the midbrain lies next to the aqueduct; the pons, cerebellum, and medulla lie next to the fourth ventricle; and the spinal cord forms the wall of the spinal canal. The lateral ventricles are paired structures that sprout like antlers from the fourth ventricle, which lies under the cortex, is shown in the lower image. The two cerebral hemispheres surround the two lateral ventricles.
