As the medulla disappears, so does the fourth ventricle, and the spinal canal begins. The dorsal column nuclei receive somatic sensory information from the spinal cord. Axons arising from the neurons in each dorsal column nucleus cross to the other side of the brain (decussate) and climb to the thalamus via the medial lemniscus.
