Minus Cerebellum

The top surface of the brainstem is exposed when both the cerebrum and cerebellum are removed. The major divisions of the brainstem are labelled on the left side, and some specific structures are labelled on the right side. The pineal body, lying above the thalamus, secretes melatonin and is involved in the regulation of sleep and sexual behaviour. The superior colliculus receives direct input from the eyes and in involved in the control of eye movements, while the inferior colliculus is an important component of the auditory system. Colliculus is Latin for 'mound'. The cerebellar peduncles are the large bundles of axons that connect the cerebellum and the brain stem.
